My Week

Well this week i did not do very much. The most eventful thing I did is turn in my first news article to The Herald. I don’ t feel as if it is up to par with some of the other articles I read in there, but I am proud of it. Since I am in News Reporting this semester, hopefully it will not be my last article to get in the paper. I wrote about the new Honors Living-Learning Community building. The HLLC ran out of room when so many new freshman applied to live there, and now 41 of the honors freshman have to live on the third floor of Kays Hall. I interviewed Rebecca Oliver, the head of the honors department. She is a really nice woman, and answered all of my questions before I even asked them. I wish all interviews could go like that.  I also interviewed one of the honors students that lives in Kays Hall, Greg Self. He doesn’t particularly like living there, which was interesting because Ms. Oliver thought everyone was happy there. But you never know.

Shelby

By the way, she is not going to read this, but I want to wish a Happy 19th birthday to my niece and best friend, Shelby. She is marching at the Football game today, so I probably won’t be able to see her, but we will celebrate Monday.

Facebook and my family

Being away from my family while I am at school is always hard. I love being here at ASU, but I wish I could be home more often. Facebook is how I get to see little pieces of my family while I am away at school. My sister Samantha, just had her second baby, Alyssa Lynn Redd. But unfortunately, it was the second day of school, and I could not miss for the birth. But her mother in law took pictures and posted them onto Facebook. I got to see my niece,
even though I could not be there. Without the internet, who knows how long it would have been before I got to see her beautiful face.

This is why I am excited to be in Internet Communications. The internet brings enrichment and satisfaction to so many people’s lives. I look forward to learning more about the internet and how it came to be what it is today.

Also, if anyone wants to add me on Facebook, I am always excited to talk to new people and make friends.

Glimmer Glassworks And Gallery Presentation

Glimmer Glassworks and Gallery may not be a place you are familiar with, but maybe it should be.  The shop does not look like much from the outside, just a plain building with a painted on window sign. But upon stepping inside, one can tell that a lot goes on in this little shop.

It is not particularly  neat on the inside of the shop, but it is no wonder why. At the time I entered, one of the owners, Kathryn Cowles, was busy at work, making a small vase. Before entering, I had never seen anyone make anything out of glass. It took many special tools and devices just to make one little vase.  At first when I arrived, Kathryn was heating up a glass tube, while her husband, Greg Cowles, sat in the back until he was needed. It took quite a while for the glass to heat, but when it was heated all the way through, the whole tube glowed orange.

After thoroughly heated, Kathryn told me she must blow into the tube to create the shape of the vase she is trying to make. “The trick is to blow just the right amount to where you won’t break the glass but still make it the right size,” says Kathryn. As she blows into the tube, she twists, dispersing the air evenly throughout.

After making the shape of the vase, it goes back to the heat, so it does not break from the temperature change.  Katheryn then goes on to dotting small sticks of colored glass onto the vase, to make it more interesting.

After this is done, Greg appears, to help Kathryn put on a glove. “This is where she has to turn up the

heat, to melt those dots,” Greg said. “It gets to hot to do it without a glove.”  Upon the glove being placed on her hand, Kathryn turns up the heat, and starts to turn the tube and vase for about 15 minutes until all of the dots are melted in place on the vase. The vase is done being heated at this point and now has to go into an kiln, so it does not crack from the room’s temperature, and can slowly be heated and cooled.

If you want to know more about Glimmer Glassworks and Gallery, they are located on 2611 East Nettleton Ave, Suite A, Jonesboro, Arkansas, 72401. They do glass presentations often, and have another on April 21st 2012, at 6 pm.

The 16th annual Red Wolf Intercollegiate

Arkansas State University hosted the 16th annual Red Wolf Intercollegiate April 2nd at the RidgePointe Country Club. The ASU golf team competed for the title and ranked 8th place with 22 teams that played.  Their final number of strokes were 589.

The country club was a very beautiful place, full of ponds, trees, and beautiful homes. While I was there, the club was bustling with life, as the golf tournament progressed.  I unfortunetly arrived too late to see most of the ASU players, but saw many other players.

I myself have never watched a golf game, but I know the basics. A player wants to get the ball into the hole in as few strikes as possible. The Red Wolves ended the opening round with a score of 291, placing them in 4th. As the next round started, ASU ran behind four more places, by taking too many strokes.

The overall best player for the ASU team was Sawyer Radler, who closed that round of the tournament with a total score of 142, taking 8th place. That was the best score by an ASU player.

The final round is being played today, April 3rd.

Spring Break 2012

A picture I took of my niece Shelby.

My spring break was not as eventful as it could have been. I did not travel to any foreign country, or do anything exciting, but I did go home to little Hardy, Arkansas , to visit my family for the first time in months. Most of my immediate family moved away from Arkansas after I graduated from high school, but my husband, Logan‘s family, stayed, and a few of my nieces. My niece, Shelby Rodish, is a senior at Highland High School this year, and one of the more eventful things I did was take her senior pictures.

My great-niece Claire, playing with the toy I got her for her birthday

My great-niece, Claire, turned 2 a couple of weeks ago. During the break, I went to her birthday party, and enjoyed taking pictures of all the babies that were there. It was a good party, and though the gift I had gotten her had already been given to her by someone else, she liked having two of the same toys.

The rest of spring break, I mostly sat around with Logan at his parent’s  house, while his parents worked. I worked on my Ebay store, and sold a lot of items, supplementing our income after a week of buying
fast food. Who wants to cook over spring break?

My great-niece,Claire, making a wish next to her daddy, Adam.

After arriving back home on Friday, all that selling led to a lot of packing and printing shipping labels. I spent much of the day preparing my items to ship, and was exhausted for the rest of the day. I spent my evening playing the online game League of Legends with my  husband.

Saturday was pretty much my last day of fun during my spring break. I went to Malco with Logan and watched The Hunger Games , a movie based off of the beloved book series. It was almost 2 and a half hours long, but it was a really good movie. I really enjoyed myself.

I spent all of Sunday catching up on my errands, chores, and homework. I regret now not doing it throughout the week, since my spring break ended with me being exhausted. But all in all, I had a really good break from classes and look forward to summer starting soon.
